Hyderabad: Amidst the tender winds at the Husainsagar lake, The Monsoon Regatta 2010 was conducted at the Secunderabad sailing club from 14th to 18th july 2010. The Monsoon Regetta 2010, considered to be one of the most fiercely contested events in the country has world class sailors from all over the country participating. The event was co-sponsored by Marine Solutions.
This event gave the Match Racing Teams a perfect opportunity to upgrade their world rankings, as it has been awarded an ISAF grade 3 world ranking event status. In Optimist class, over 50 participants competed for the Marine Solutions Optimist Open Trophy.
Defending Champion Upamanyu Dutta won the Marine Solutions Optimist Open Trophy handsomely with an unbeatable score of 17 points and a race to spare. But like a true sailor , he showed true sportsmanship by competing in the last race and winning it convincingly. After the initial disappointing run, he proved his mettle by winning the remaining races. He outclassed his top competitor Zephra Currimbhoy of RMYC who was leading Upamanyu by one point in the first two races and regained his Numero Uno spot with ease. The shifty wind conditions at the lake made the battle for the Marine Solutions Optimist Open Trophy even more challenging. Zephra Currimbhoy(RMYC) finished second while third and fourth places was occupied by K.C.Ganapathy (TNSA) and Ekta Yadav (INWTC).
R Mahesh of INWTC(Mumbai) won in the match racing format while Kaushal Kumar & Girish M of AWSA won in the Hobie 16 class.
The prize distribution ceremony was held at the Marriot Convention Centre. The presence of world class sailors like Homi Motivala, Gautama Dutta, Lt.Gen. KS Rao, Rajesh Choudhary, Retd.Commodore. S K Mongia made the event more memorable. Not to forget the presence of Cdr. Dilip Dhonde, the first indian to sail solo around the world.
Gautama Datta , M.D. of marine solutions was mesmerized and said “The Indian fleet now has the potential to hit Asian standards if not world!!! “
