Mumbai: The Tolani Mid Season, one of the most popular championships conducted by Royal Bombay yacht club was held on 5th and 6th Feb 2011. The championship was fiercely fought in J24, Seabird and Lightning class boats.

The West Coast Marine Race Team skippered by Aashim Mongia sailed to victory with 5 bullets in the six race series in J24 class. The crew comprising Gulshan Chunekar, Varun Raj and Chetan Fernandes displayed excellent skills and coordination. For Varun, it was his second victory since his return to competitive sailing last month.

Seabird class featured a decent mix of young dinghy racers and seasoned club sailors. Murugan Nadar topped the scoreboard with ease in spite of being pitted against much faster boats like Ibis, Curlew and Neil.

In a perfect Ben Ainslie style, Nadar crossed the fleet by more than 25 boat lengths right at the start in two races. Playing amazing tactics throughout, he maintained the lead and finished first in three races. His crew included Arjuna awardee sailor G L Yadav, Guangzhou Silver medallist Balraj Yadav and Aarti Pawar.

In the lightning class, Prasad Shelar with crew Suraj Singh and Abhijeet Nair took the title in a closely fought battle against the Indian Army’s team led by Sandip Jain. Both the teams took three bullets in the six race series. In the last race Prasad had to ensure a top three finish to claim the title which he did with ease by finishing second, very close behind Sandip.
