Vizag: Brijraj Verma along with crew PS Rao took the honours in the 7th Hobie 16 National Sailing Championship 2011 held off Rushikonda beach, Vizag. Sailing very consistently throughout the series he finished all ten races in the top four with a total of 5 bullets.
“The sea conditions here are very different from Mumbai so I practiced at Vizag for 15 days before the championship to understand the wind and sea conditions. Back in Mumbai I had practiced every single day for more than a month and my preparation gave me all the confidence to win here,” Verma said.
This years title has made Verma the only sailor to have won three national sailing titles in a row in Hobie 16 class. He had won both the inland and coastal titles last year. For crew P S Rao, it is his second national title with Verma.
Patel Kamlesh and U B Rawankar of Army Yachting Node finished second while this years Sail the Gulf champion Kalaga Yaquob and Rajeev Kumar of AWSA finished third overall.
A total of 21 teams took part in the five day event which saw participants riding waves higher than 5 meters and battling winds gusting between 15 to 25 knots.
