Mumbai: Rohini Rau of the Royal Madras Yacht Club, Chennai, made history by winning her 7th consecutive National title in the Women’s category in the Laser Coastal National Championship 2011 held in Mumbai. It was a special win as she also finished second in the open category tied on points with first place (Dharmender Singh of Army Yachting Node, Mumbai)
The Laser Radial is the women’s single hander class at the 2012 London Olympics. “ Rohini sailed an outstanding series and showed she is our leading hope in the Laser Radial Class for the Olympics in 2012”, said Race Officer and former Chief National Coach Capt Homi Motivala.
It was a closely fought regatta where the results were decided only by the end of the final race in the 12 race series. Rohini attributes her progress to the hard work and expert guidance of coaches, Allen Julie, Arthur Brett, Belinda Stowell and Pete Conway. She has attended four Emerging Nations Programme Camps in Perth, Australia, an initiative to help nations to qualify for the Olympics in 2012 as the first qualifying World Championship will be held in Perth in December 2011.
“I was a little disappointed that I was so close to wining the Open National Title. However, I am happy with the way I sailed and I know this will finally lead me to my ultimate dream of being the first Indian women to sail at the Olympics,” the third year MBBS student of Chenglepet Government Medical College said when asked about the tie.
Rohini will head to Europe to participate at the World Cup events in Weymouth and Germany as part of the Indian National Squad before heading off to the World Championship in Perth, Australia in December. Rohini would like to acknowledge the support of SAI, SDAT, AMM Foundation, RMYC and YAI.
