Hyderabad: Dharmender Singh of Army Yachting Node won his second national title this year by taking the top spot in the Laser Radial class at the 26th National Laser Sailing Championship at Hussain Sagar, Hyderabad. Now he has both the Coastal and Inland National title under his belt. Dharmender got only one gun in the 11 race series, but it was his consistency that paid off in the end. He topped the fleet with only 27 points.
On winning the series, Dharmender said, “It was one of the most challenging light wind series I have sailed coz I was the heaviest among all the sailors. Keeping up with the fleet on downwind was difficult so I kept my patience and tried to gain maximum on upwind.”
Sharif Khan of EMESA finished second overall with 33 points while Xerxes Bamboat of Royal Bombay yacht club who won the opening race of the series finished third with 57 points.
Among the women Mrinalini Santhanam (TNSA) took the Gold while the reigning Monsoon Regatta Champion Alekhya Sudam (SSC) won the Silver.
In the Laser Radial Youth, Varun Thakkar of TNSA sailed extremely well to finish first overall. Winning 2 races in the open fleet he gave the seniors a run for their money. He finished 7th in the open fleet. Avneesh Kumar (EMESA) finished second overall while Abhimanyu Panwar finished third overall.
