Mandwa: The Performance Sailing Program (RBYC) conducted an 8 days long Diwali coaching camp at Bombay Sailing Association, Mandwa under coach Eshed Meseritz of Israel (recommended by Chief Coach YAI).  A total of 28 sailors from all over the country attended the camp in Optimist, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial and 29er class boats. Veronica Zivna, an Optimist girl sailor from Czech Republic also attended the camp.

The sailors spent 5 to 6 hours training on water everyday followed by long debrief sessions after sailing. The wind conditions throughout the camp were mainly light with 6-8 knots breeze and a few hours of 15-18 knots breeze. The sea was flat but the sailors had to deal with extremely strong tides.

The main focus of the camp was to make sailors spot wind shifts so they mostly did an upwind-downwind course. Some of the sailors had compasses and they learned how to work with those and their performance increased much more.  The sailors were debriefed after every course and to make things interesting they were also made to go around boat handling courses. Even the sailors who before couldn’t spot shifts eventually started to get the idea.

“I believe it is only over the past year that any of the sailors have used compasses and now they may be able to use it as an effective tool. The Indian optimist fleet has got huge potential and with proper training, good coaching, more time on water, understanding of the rig and fitness they can close the gap with top sailors”, said Eshed.

The laser sailors also gained some basic sailing knowledge and improved on the technical part from the camp, apart from wind shifts and boat handling skills.

“The laser sailors are very talented and are willing to work hard to achieve their goals and that’s very important” said the coach.

The camp achieved all of its main goals and everyone seemed satisfied with the result achieved at the end of 8 days of rigorous training and learning at the camp.

“It takes many years of training and good coaching to produce success at a high level and whilst the camp worked well from everyone, it demonstrated to me that talent will not emerge without work and education”, added Eshed.
