Rohini Rau - Jeanneau Sailor of the month

Rohini Rau created sensation at the 2011 Sail Melbourne Regatta last month, the opening event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup 2011 – 12 by finishing 3rd and 8th on the second day of the championship. She took perfect advantage of the light wind conditions to beat Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Xu Lija of China in the third race. In the fourth race she beat World No.16 Tenkanen Tulla of Finland. Xu Lija and Tenkanen Tulla finished overall first and second respectively at Sail Melbourne.

This was Rohini’s best ever performance at a World Cup event. She recorded a 13th place finish in the last race and was placed 19th overall.

Currently she is competing at the ongoing 2011 ISAF World Championship in Perth to qualify and become the first Indian women to sail at the Olympics in 2012.

The 25-year-old sailor from Chennai failed to make it to the Beijing Olympics by five spots after finishing 33rd in the Radial World Championship at Auckland in 2008. However, she is now is gunned up to do well at the Sailing World Championship at Perth. If she manages to finish among the top-31 countries in the Laser Radial class there, Rohini will qualify for the London Olympics 2012.

Rohini is also the first Indian woman to win an international medal (bronze) in an Olympic class Laser Radial, which she won at the Izola Spring Cup in Slovenia in 2009.
