Rohini Rau at ISAF World Championship 2011, Perth

7 time national champion, Rohini Rau was no doubt the best bet to win a medal for India at the ongoing Asian Sailing Championship in Langkawi, Malaysia.

A closer look at the list of participants in the Laser Radial Class reveals that Rohini is ranked way ahead of all the sailors competing at the event which began yesterday. Currently ranked 10th in Asia and 151st in the world, the closest rival for her would have been Malaysian sailor Nur Amirah who is ranked 15th in Asia and 280th in world. Had Rohini competed in the event, India would have been assured of a gold in the Laser Radial Class.

“I wasn’t allowed to go for the Asian Sailing Championship 2012 at Langkawi, Malaysia even on own funding. Another sailor Nitin Mongia, a World Champion was also denied an entry into the same event in the Match Racing category. It’s sad that none of the senior sailors were allowed to take part. I am now focusing on Olympic qualification and hope to have the support of the YAI and the government. Thanks again to everyone who continue to support me”, Rohini mentioned on Facebook.

The Government and YAI are proactively supporting this talented sailor in her quest to qualify India for the 2012 Olympic Games.
