Pushparajan Muttu and Narendra Rajput

India’s Laser Radial, 470 and Hobie 16 class sailors would have been among the favorites to win medals at the Asian Sailing Championship 2012 which concluded on Saturday. However, India took part only in Match Racing, 29er and Optimist class.

The gold in 470 class went to Malaysia’s Ku Anas and Mohammad Hafizuddin. Interestingly, our top 470 team of Pushparajan Muttu and Narendra Rajput had beaten them in the 2011 ISAF World Championship at Perth. (The table below shows comparison between 470 competitors at the event and Muttu / Rajput)

Muttu and Rajput are also ranked above the Malaysian team in the ISAF World Rankings and they had very strong chances of winning the Gold.

Brijraj Verma and Pankaj Kumar

In the Hobie 16 class, Brijraj Verma and Pankaj Kumar could have fetched a medal for India. Verma’s consistent performance in Hobie 16 over the last 3 years speaks volumes of his talent and dedication.

They had finished 5th out of 33 teams in the Hobie 16 Asian Championship at China last year and were aiming to win a medal at this years event. They would have entered as the third best team – behind Thailand and Hong Kong. The duo definitely deserved a chance to compete for India at the Asian Championship in Malaysia.

In Laser Radial class, 7 time national champion Rohini Rau was the best bet to win a medal for India. click here to read full article on Rohini Rau

  1. I think it is very sad that we had the potential to get three Golds and the YAI were unwilling to send them even at no cost to the Government! A real pity! It would have given Indian Sailing such a boost!
