Ayaz Shaikh’s 2011 was undoubtedly one of the greatest years in his sailing career. He was the only sailor to win international medals for India in 2011 – Gold at Thailand Match Race Challenge and bronze at ISAF Nations Cup Regional Finals – Asia.
Coming into 2012, the question was whether or not his incredible success could possibly be matched, or maybe even topped.
Well, with only three months into 2012, Ayaz has dug deep to send a message to everyone that he possesses the talent to compete at the highest levels of sailing by winning two consecutive national titles to start the 2012 season.
He thoroughly dismantled world No.48 R Mahesh in the semi finals of Match Racing Nationals and then won the finals 3-2 against Atool Sinha to win the title. Then in the same month he claimed the 470 National Champions crown by winning 7 races out of the 8 race series.
It’s clear that Ayaz’s dominance is constructed with extraordinary talent combined with supreme effort and drive.
“Our goal in Match Racing is to enter the top 25 in the world rankings by the end of this year and therefore I am hoping to receive support from YAI to compete in more Match Racing Championships in the coming months. We will continue to train and compete in all Match Racing events conducted in India”, said the ambitious sailor.
The National champion will also continue to train in 470 class hoping to enter in international 470 championships in the future.
“I think you go into a new championship after winning one before with a lot of confidence, so that’s the good thing,” believes Ayaz.
Ayaz will be gunning for 420 Nationals in Chennai and Monsoon Regatta in Hyderabad, but for now he can enjoy his latest and well-deserved titles.
